Are on line purchases from Ritz Camera?
30.July, 2009
Purchases made through Ritz online service were made there instead of Circut City because Ritz Camera said there were no taxes due when purchased from them on line. Now I get tax forms from Department of Revenue Pennsylvania asking about purchases made that may require me to pay sales tax. My question is this, should Ritz on line Camera have charged Pennsylvania Sales Tax?
Ritzcameras.com is different from ritz cameras stores, at least on paper (even though they have the same owner).
Ritzcameras.com advertises that they pay the sales tax, so you need to talk with them. They should have paid the sales tax, not you, if that’s what they advertised.
However, if you went into a physical Ritz Cameras store and picked it up there…you might have to pay sales tax.

Indiana unemployment on Michigan return.?
30.July, 2009
I live in Michigan, but received $8k in unemployment for Indiana. I’m confused on how to report this on Indiana and Michigan income tax returns. Indiana and Michigan are recripocal states. I have wages from Indiana that had MI wages withheld. When I contacted the Indiana Department of Revenue, they said I had to file the non-resident (not recripocal) return, because the unemployment was not reciprocal. So I filed Indiana, allocating the Indiana wages to Michigan and the Indiana unemployment to Indiana. One of my questions is now on the Michigan return, do I put the Indiana Unemployment as the income attributable to other states deduction on Sch. 1? Neither Indiana or Michigan specifically address what happens with unemployment benefits from a state where you are not a resident! Add in the reciprocal states information, and I’m totally confused. Can someone help me figure out if I am filing these Indiana and Michigan returns correctly in regards to the Indiana unemployment?
I have not filled out a reciprocal form – but it makes sense to me that you put the unemployment as attributable to another state. Attach a copy of your Indiana return and your federal return if you are paper filing…
You can call the Michigan Department of Treasury to ask them if you want to be more certain. 1-800-827-4000 The only problem, is that they have been extremely busy.
Or check out their web site at Michigan.gov. They have a half-way decent search function.
I’ve been separated from my husband for over a year now, and have been using my maiden name since we split up. Since most of my identification was never changed to his name, it’s worked out fine so far. However, I recently got my T4 tax form from my work and it has my maiden name on it – however my name with Revenue Canada is still in my married name. Is this going to be a problem? Or will they just go by the social insurance number?
CRA (they aren’t called Rev Can any more), doesn’t seem top care what name you use. My wife is in sort of the reverse problem to you, she never changed to a married name officially, but uses it, including her work name. So CRA has her as her maiden name, her T-4 uses married. They seem to be able to figure it out (and isn’t that an odd situation, a government department that can handle something potentially confusing)!
Do you hate your state’s department of revenue?
30.July, 2009
I hate the Georgia department of Revenue. The people they have working there are not the brightest crayons in the box. I paid a balance owed from 2003 in full in February of this year. My husband had made a mistake in our taxes in 2003 and didn’t we didn’t catch it until we had them professionally done in 2005. Well, we paid the balance in full in February of 2006 and we paid it online through the Georgia Department of Revenue website. We got a certified letter in the mail Thursday and my husband picked it up from the post office Friday. Would you believe that the Georgia Department of Revenue send us a letter saying that they are going to garnish my husband wages if we don’t pay??? We have been on the phone all day with the Georgia Department of Revenue and to no avail. Every time we got someone on the line, they transferred us to some other robot who didn’t know his head from a hole in the ground. We don’t know what else to do but to keep calling. They close at 4:30 daily
Send them a registered/certified letter along with proof of payment.
File form 4868

Remember that this is not an extension to pay late. If you
owe the IRS, you are required to pay what you owe by 4/17.
The form is simply an extension for the paper work.
What is a difference between revenues and profits?
30.July, 2009
Why when a company’s revenues increase significantly, not necessarily it’s profits do the same? For e.g. Wall Street’s estimation on Pfizer’s health.
Thank you for all versions.
Revenue is money coming in as in sales.
Profit is what is left after expenses. If your revenue is more than your expenses, you have no profit.
A sportswear store sells baseball caps with the local baseball team’s logo on them. Last year the store sold 600 caps at $15 each. The store manager is planning to increase the price. A consumer survey shows that for every $1 increase there will be a drop of 30 sales a year.
a) What should the selling price be to maximize the annual revenue?
b) What is the maximum revenue from the caps?
How do I figure it out? Please help!
Hello Julia,
I’ll assign some variables:
Let R be revenue per year, in dollars.
Then R = units sold * price per unit.
Let units sold be U caps.
Let price per unit be P, in dollars per cap.
Thus:
R = UP.
Note that to begin with, P = $15 per cap, and U = 600 caps.
To increase the price by $1, and drop sales by 30:
R = (600 – 30) (15 + 1).
To do the same thing again:
R = (600 – 30 – 30) (15 + 1 + 1) = (600 – 60) * (15 + 2).
Notice that these will decrease by multiples of 30 and increase by multiples of 1 respectively.
Let’s give the number of repetitions the value n.
So:
U = 600 – 30n.
P = 15 + n.
So:
R = UP = (600 – 30n) (15 + n).
Expanding:
R = 9000 + 600n – 450n – 30n².
R = 9000 + 150n – 30n².
Factorising:
R = -30 [n² - 5n - 30 ].
Completing the square:
R = -30 [ (n - 2½)² - (2½²) - 30 ].
R = -30 [ (n - 2½)² - 36¼ ].
R = 30*36¼ – 30(n – 2½)².
[ NOTE:
If you have not been taught differentiation, do not panic. Since you have completed the square, any derivative will only be 0 at the point when the square is 0.
i.e. (n - 2½)² must equal 0.
(n - 2½)² = 0.
Square rooting:
n - 2½ = 0.
n = 2½.
I have included the differentiation below to assert the theorem.]
Differentiating:
dR/dn = -60(n – 2½) = 150 – 60n.
Solving for 0:
dR/dn = 0 → 150 – 60n = 0.
150 = 60n.
n = 15/6 = 2½.
So, for (a) :
Let n = 2½.
P = 15 + n = 15 + 2½ = 17½.
Thus P = $17.50 per cap.
For (b) :
Again, n = 2½.
R = (600 – 30n) (17½).
R = (600 – 30(2½)) (17½).
R = (600 – 75) (17½).
R = 525 * 17½.
R = $9187.50 per year.
What happend to all that property tax revenue places like CA has seen explode over the last decade?
30.July, 2009
The had rapidly increasing tax revenue, then things get a little dicey and they are broke. No rainy day fund, they still were over spending and not saving?
Fire them all.
California, like Washington in the 80’s, spent the ever increasing tax revenues even faster than they came in. Their debt actually rose and now there is no money..
