I have received Massachusetts State Tax Refunds my whole life. Last years return (for the year of 2007) I received $213.00. This year I was only scheduled to received $90.00 back in taxes, but non the less I was due a refund. Now today I received a letter from the Massachusetts DOR, saying that they took my $90.00 refund and applied it to an income tax liability of $227.00 from 12/31/2007? What the hell is this? What would cause this? Of course it’s a Saturday and I can’t get ahold of these crooks. Please help!
Get all previous returns and have a professional check them out.

"Notice" from Illinois Department of Revenue?
21.October, 2009
I went online to the llinois Department of Revenue’s website to check the status of my tax return. When I query my return it shows up as an existing problem (problems) with 2008 tax return. I did file my return 6 months late without filing an extension.
It said they mailed a notice. However, I have not received anything. Tried to call but they are closed today.
Anyone here have an idea what kind of notices the state would mail. I have never had an issue with my tax return.
If you had to pay in money when you filed then they are going to charge you interest for being late.
They are probably conducting an internal audit of all of your past returns right now, that is why you haven’t gotten the notice yet. If they determine that you did this intentionally, which is likely, they’ll access a punitive fine on top of the interest they’ll charge you.
Otherwise they might just send a warning. Although it is illegal to file late, if you didn’t owe them money they probably won’t make a big deal out of it. Just the same, they are probably auditing all of your recent returns.
I recieved a Distraint Warrant and Writ of Execution from the Oregon Department of Revenue?
17.October, 2009
Well today I received a Distraint Warrant and Writ of Execution from the Oregon Department of Revenue that says:
"The warrant serves the same function as a court judgment. We use the warrant in collection actions such as garnishment of wages/bank accounts, property seizures, federal tax refund offset, and creation of property liens."
I made a mistake and forgot all about owing the state from taxes last year. The soonest I can pay them is this tuesday (I received the notice Friday), I noticed they tried withdrawing out of my bank account but there was nothing in it. They also contacted the bank about it. I left a message on the Revenue Agents phone messages but she won’t be in until Monday. Should I be stressing out right now over whether or not someone is going to show up at my house and start taking items? The total owed is $166.04 and whatever fees needed. How do I go about taking care of this? Do I go to the Department of revenue and pay them and that takes care of it all? Please help me, i’ve never had to deal with something like this before.
I just want to take care of it and not have to deal with it anymore. I’m just worried someone will be showing up at my house take stuff, my parents would kill me.
If I were you, I would seek legal assistance first… I live in Oregon too, and they sent me a similar thing – only mine was an old account from over 9 years ago. It was simply a bill from a state agency that had been handed to them for collection and which they never, not once, tried to collect on, besides pocketing my kicker refund last year. Now suddenly it’s an "urgent and important matter."
I expect they never bothered sending you a bill or notice about your back taxes, either. The reason why is, same as in my case, the money involved is a pittance and they don’t normally consider it worth the effort of sending you a bill for. Until a recession happens and they need money to make up for the money they’re not getting from rich people (that is, from property owners and income taxes).
Legally they are supposed to send you information about what collection actions you can take. There are also minimum amounts that are off-limits to property liens. Something like $1000-$2000 cash, a car. Up to one house. They can’t barge in and take your television or household goods either, those are exempt up to a certain value.
They are supposed to send you a notice explaining all of that. If they didn’t, I suggest you get a lawyer.
My gut feeling about it is this: DOR is calling in all the long-shots that they normally figured would not pay off for them. They’re desperate, and someone in state government has lit a fire under them to get money.
If you pay them, of course that will get them off your back. But aren’t you a little bit ticked off about them trying to garnish your bank account without any warning? They’re playing hardball with you.
Talk to legal assistance. It may just be that you haven’t got enough property for them to seize anything, anyhow. Don’t give in without a fight.
<edit> oh, you live at your parents house, forget it. They can’t seize your parent’s property unless you’re a legal dependent of theirs. Even then, they would have to send them notice about it, not you.

i was trying to apply for a bussiness, or to verify with the state/city or a business i wanted to start. the letter, more detailed, is from a commissioner and the taxpayer services division regristration and licencing unit. it says i have a witholding # and that i am a quarterly filer. it also talks of a cupon booklet to be used for my witholding payments. this sounds bad to me… what am i in? is it bad. this was also like 2 years ago. i got no cupon booklet and haven’t heard anything of it.
When you run your own business, you have to pay your own taxes. You don’t have an employer to pay them out of your wages. When they say you are a quarterly filer, that means you are to file your taxes from that business every quarter (every 3 months), they give you a "coupon" booklet that has pages in it that you send in with each payment. Like a statement that has all your tax info on it. You fill out the amount you owe and are sending in and mail it all to the Dept of Rev. This way at the end of the year or tax season, you don’t owe a huge lump sum, you have paid your taxes throughout the year. Tell them you didn’t get the booklet. If you didn’t start the business and didn’t make any money from it then you don’t have anything to worry about. If you did the business and didn’t pay the taxes then you do have something to worry about.
