How do free newspapers make money apart from advertising? Are there other streams of revenue?
03.November, 2009
The Evening Standard (in London) paper recently turned into a free publication. I understand that they did this as they believe the increased revenue from advertising (due to rise in readership levels) will be more than previously received with the cover price. Can they make money in other ways apart from advertising whilst being a free paper?
Agent, thanks for your take. I appreciate it. It will be interesting to see if the national papers go down the same route in the future. I guess it will depend ultimately on their readership volumes and moves taken by competitors.
they use several other instruments for income: lottery games, paid publications, sms games, getting sponsorships and donations…
What to do when exchange rates have a negative impact on revenue?
31.October, 2009
Let’s say that an exchange rate has a negative revenue impact of -4 to -6%. What do you do? Would you decrease your advertising in that country, increase prices, limit the number of products shipped there? What would be the best strategy?
Since oil is pegged to the US $, Oil cartels increase prices, right?
If they do not increase oil prices, their dollars received for a barrel of oil is worth less in foreign markets. Buying power decreases for them.
This may become a common occurrence with the US $.
China is feeling it. Their prior investments are worth less that they paid in principle. Treasury bonds are now issued for 3-4 years. Unheard of in past years, but it’s a result of the $ deteriorating in value over long term.
You still should be competitive with all other imports, as they all are experiencing the same phenomena.
The last consideration should be demand for your product and competitiveness. If those are diminished, you may need to restyle or revamp your marketing strategy or product lines.
It’s not unheard of to cut the quality of a product, although that can be negative.
Youtube Revenue Sharing: How do I know if its working or not?
29.October, 2009
Right now I have 3 videos that have been picked up for revenue sharing. Yet I can’t find ads running in the videos and when I check Google Ad Sense it theirs still no data from youtube.
I have the 3 videos enabled for Revenue Sharing. They’ve accumulating up to around 1k views. My first revenue video has been there for over 2 months.
Any advise or should I just be patient?
Perhaps potential advertisers have looked at
your channel and videos — and decided they
are not interested in associating themselves
with you. It happens.
How do Microsoft and the owners of Firefox make money? Google is planning to create a browser also to compete with them called "chrome". I was wondering where does the source of revenue come in? There are no ads, etc. These programs are free.
Microsoft makes money (obviously) by selling their software and having a big monopoly on the desktop. Firefox does it by "advertising" Google by having the search bar. Firefox is open source, so much of the work done to make it was done for free by people who wanted to contribute, making it much easier to support financially.

I work for a construction contractor. What are some legal ways of bringing in revenue?
The most common method is to sell their product/service.
How do I maximize revenue in this word problem?
25.October, 2009
When a theatre owner charges for $5 for admission, there is an average attendance of 180 people. For every $0.10 increase in admission, there is a loss of 1 customer from the average number. What admission should be charged in order to maximize revenue?
Let x denote the number of customers (i.e., number of tickets sold)
Let y denote the ticket price (in dollars)
Then
x = 180 – 1*(y-5)/0.1 = 180 – 10(y-5) = 230 – 10y
The revenue R is the number of tickets sold times the price per ticket, Therefore,
R = y(230 – 10y) = 230y – 10y²
I’m sure you can finish this problem now.
Home prices way down, should your city raise property taxes to make up for lost revenue?
23.October, 2009
In my home town the value of homes are down as much as 30 percent. Most of the revenue for schools and police comes from property taxes, so rapidly lower housing prices have cut the revenue needed for these important things.
What should the Mayor and City Council do with rapidly falling home asssesments and tax revenue, should they raise the tax rate to make up for the difference?
Start living with in there means! City county and state governments make decisions that affect the economic welfare of there citizens. They need to deal with the consequences. Just like you and I have to.
Maybe if the re salts of there decisions, hits in there own wallet they will start making better choices.
What are the red flags used by the inland revenue?
21.October, 2009
I am self employed.
Saw an article in the Times recently saying the Revenue are going to be investigating many more individuals due to falling tax receipts and that they allegedly have ’super computers’ that red flag people, but not necessarily the staff!!
So what are the red flags, and what does this computer (if it exists!) look at?
Funnily enough the Revenue does not publish this information. "This text has been withheld because of exemptions in the Freedom of Information Act 2000" is all you get.
However the points mentioned earlier will give you a good idea. Remember the Revenue gets to see every tax return filed – so they know what the average tradesman in any area should be earning – and also knows what the best and worst will be earning. If any of your numbers look significantky different from what would normally be expected, then that would at least warrant a quick "look-see"
Do IRS and Revenue Canada share information about those who live in both Canada and the USA?
17.October, 2009
Would IRS be allowed to share tax information about an individual to Revenue Canada without the individual’s knowledge or permission?
They don’t share TAX information, but they most certainly DO share INCOME information. No consent is required to share information on income and most tax treaties do provide for the mutual exchange of earnings information on each other’s citizens.
