The Cause for Unity

09.April, 2010

Upon coming home, many African American soldiers realized their country did not intend to serve them as they had so valiantly served it. Huntington speaks of returning to the roots of a White Anglo Saxon Protestant (WASP) culture.
The challenge is that this culture does not benefit those people other than the WASP themselves. His disdain for the rapid decline of America’s national identity and unity since the 1960s is somewhat perplexing. King address this very issue when he states, “You deplore demonstrations taking place in Birmingham. But your statement, I am sorry to say, fails to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations.” That is powerful because it speaks so clearly to what Huntington too believes is the cause for unity.
