He further states, “I do not remember to have ever met a slave who could tell his birthday.” These are powerful statements because I think most can easily become confused and think that slavery was simply the control of the physical surrounding of an individual but these statements cement for me that slavery was equally if not more about mental and emotional control as well as physical bondage.
Imagine for a moment, not knowing your own birthday. Something that men and women celebrate all over the world is not recognized in slavery. This says clearly to the slave that their birth is not worth recording.
